Broken land

We walked in silence

Over broken glass

With shades

To protect us from the light

We moved in slow motion

Through the void

With forced smiles

And long forgotten memories

Of a distant past.

Limbs ached

As we ambled on

Through the killing fields

Over this broken land

That for so long had flourished.

Somewhere in the distance

Someone was singing

A voice

Drifted on the breeze

But when the wind died down

It faded away

And once again

There was only silence.

We took shelter

By the standing stones

And only when the storm past

Could we go on.

We shared our last bottle of wine

Passing around a silver cup

And each taking sips.

We smiled

Just for a moment

But as the light fades

 the shadows

Begin to play tricks on us

Once again.

Days go on like this

Nothing ever happens

The music won't play anymore.

We dance to a silent drum beat

In this Hell That We created

The human race did this

By our own hands

All that we had to do

Was come together

But so many refused

Because they had been taught to hate

Or to be afraid

Of people of different faiths

And nobody showed them the light

Or told them

That such trivialities

Were of little importance

In the grand scheme of things.

All said and done

We are all flesh and blood

But this is where we find ourselves

On this  broken land.

What legacy will we leave

For the next generation

And beyond?

Shame on us

Shame on us

Sadest of all

People still don't lurk

So we continue

In perpetual motion

But standing still

Going nowhere

But falling further into the abyss.

When will the truth finaly dawn on people

And a change come about?

Will we be able to build a world

Without bloodshed

And hatred

And bigotry

So that we can be proud

Of the world that we live in

And noo longer have to live with this fear

That has become so common?

For too long cold hands

Have stirred the pot of hate

They have spoken with such feeling

That the lies have been hidden

And taken as truth

Passed down the generations

The hatred

That the spin doctors spread

Sinks into people's minds

And they begin to believe

That they are thinking freely

That these are their own views

But we are being manipulated

We are under their spell

We need to break that spell

And unite

All of us

Only that

Will repair this broken land.
