Demons

The first pint goes down in one

And it tastes good

He needed it

He’s battered and bruised from the trials of his day

Pints no. 2 and 3 go down as fast

He puts some tunes on the jukebox

And sits back

He watches people come and go

As he empties his mind of all his woes

He knocks back pint no. 4

Its 6pm and his eyes are already turning red

He has demons in his veins

They have control of him now

His thoughts are no longer his own

He doesn’t want to go home yet

To that empty bed sitter

That he jokingly calls home

Pint no.5 tastes even better than its predecessors

Because now he’s in the zone

And beer, that’s the only thing that matters

Truth be told, beer is the one constant in his life

It’s always been there

From sneaking behind the bike shed’s at school

With a can or two of skoll

To his first legal pint at 18

To his stag night

His wedding night

Wetting the babies head

when each of his two babies came into the world

To drowning his sorrows

When his marriage hit the rocks

Beer was always his first thought in the morning

And his last thought at night

He knew in his heart this had to stop

He couldn’t go on like this

But he was caught up in the cycle

It was like he was on a fast spin

And he didn’t know how to make it stop

Pint no.6

He still had change in his pocket

The bills would have to wait

But now the memories started to bite

He was sure he could see her face, and she was smiling

The way she had done when they first met

But that smile had gone away

And he knew that was down to him

He missed the feelings of intimacy

He missed sharing his bed

He missed the sex

She wasn’t just his lover

She was hi best friend

Now he had to live with the knowledge

That he may never see her again

And he wouldn’t want her too

Not like this

The shame would kill him

Pint no. 7

Last one honest

Who was he kidding?

How many times had he said that?

He wasn’t even convincing himself any more

Besides tomorrow was another day

And the counter would be reset to zero.
